Cause for Celebration
Charles Darwent's Story

Charles Darwent is a patient at BodyMind Synergy Health Centre. Charles recently celebrated a birthday which the doctors thought he would never live to see due to his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS, ( Lou Gehrig's disease), ALS destroys motor neurons that are an important link in the nervous system, and through which the brain controls the voluntary muscles throughout the body. 90% die of ALS within three to five years of diagnosis and ALS is the most common cause of neurological death in Canada. The following is from his recent birthday invitation and a letter he wrote to Dr.Cheng.

Beginning in 1996, the onset of some form of mysteries form of neurological disease struck the "Mighty One", eventually diagnosed as Multiple Sclerosis. Over the years it progressed and finally took it's toll when his masterpiece (his melodious voice, which could charm the hat off a monkey!) started to disintegrate, which cumulated in his early retirement in March 2001. Since then as a family, we have battled, chronic fatigue, significant pain, numerous sleepless nights and weight loss to name a few. However the "best"  was yet to come when his diagnosis was changed from MS to ALS on Friday December 13 2002.

The medical experts put his life expectancy at "four months to a year". As he therefore should have been dead on or before December 2003, we are now celebrating the first of many birthdays that he was not supposed to be here for.

A GREAT CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION INDEED!

Dr Xia,

Please take a couple of minutes to read this it took a long time for me to write it with just one finger
Thank you, Charles D.

When I was at the ALS Clinic last week the doctors were very surprised [shocked] to see how little my physical condition has changed in the year since they had last seen me... When they first said that I have ALS they said I would be dead by last Christmas.. but I am still here! ! !

I do believe that it is largely due to your care and treatment that I have survived, and I want you to know that I appreciate and am grateful for your help. Thank you.

Charles D.

How Does Acupuncture Work?
By Dr Xia Cheng, MD (China), PhD, RAc, Director CITCM

Nowadays, more and more people are willing to try acupuncture. However, many of them come into an acupuncture clinic without knowing how acupuncture works. Their believe that acupuncture may help them is, for the most part, based on other people who had told them it worked for them, or they had heard from here and there that acupuncture works. How does acupuncture work?  This is a commonly asked question when people come into my clinic. I would like to take this opportunity give a brief introduction to acupuncture and to answer this question.
