Chinese Medicine and
Flu Season
With flu and cold season upon us
it is time to look at what we can do to prevent or alleviate
illness. We are all aware of how disruptive it is when flu and
colds affect our families, missed work and school not to
mention the general misery of aches and pains. If we still go
into work or school we are passing it on to others, not
to mention that usually we are not on top of our game because
we are just not feeling well.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has
long been able to offer not only effective treatments, but
also herbal remedies that can help to prevent getting sick in
the first place. Jade Screen, an ancient Chinese herbal
remedy has been traditionally used to boost the immune system
to help prevent illness during flu season in China. There are
also many other herbal prescriptions in use to help treat and
cure flu and colds. Many patients of BodyMind Synergy Health
Centre, and their families have used these prescriptions to
successfully avoid and cure the flu in their
families
Dr Cheng has several Herbal Prescriptions that are offered on a regular
basis in her clinic. You do not need an appointment or a
prescription, as they are available over the counter.
Jade Screen:
An ancient Chinese
prescription used to prevent colds or flu and to boost the
immune system. It is recommended for people who are regularly
susceptible to becoming sick or who are in frequent contact
with members of the public.
Anti Viral Remedy
Dr. Cheng's own prescription
with anti viral properties used to treat and prevent flu and
colds. People who are in very close contact with someone who
is ill or are feeling the first signs of illness should take
this prescription.
Sinus Remedy
Another of Dr. Cheng's
prescriptions her sinus remedy is used by many of her patients
to successfully treat sinus infections and allergies.
Acupuncture treatments and
cupping, another part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, can
also give much needed relief from the aches, pains and
congestion caused by cold and flu. When combined with herbal
treatments it can strengthen the effect of herbs for quicker
relief and get you back to normal much sooner.
Call us today to find out how TCM
can help you to get through the flu season.

A Historical
Perspective Of Ethical Practice Of Traditional Chinese Medicine
By Dr. Xia Cheng
The development of ethics in Chinese medicine goes back
thousands of years, and is revealed in the many stories of
outstanding doctors and the principles that guided their work
as healers.
One of these is Dr. Dong Feng who lived on Lushan
Mountain, Jiangxi province during the Three Kingdoms Period
(220-280). Dong Feng never refused patients no matter how ill
they were. He never received money for his services but
instead, he asked his recovered patients to thank him by
planting apricot trees in his garden. Those who had been
slightly ill were asked to plant one tree, those who had been
seriously ill were asked to plant five. Years later, Dong
Feng's garden had grown into an apricot orchard. In early
spring, the trees blossomed. And in summer, the trees were
overburdened with fruit. Every year when the apricots were
ripe, Dong put a container in his granary and a notice on the
wall, saying those who wanted to buy apricots could exchange
grain for them. One container of apricots was worth one
container of grain. People were trusted to do the exchange
themselves without telling him. Dong kept a small quantity of
grain for himself and gave the rest to poor orphans, widows,
childless elderly people and travelers too hurried to have
brought food with them. People spoke highly of Dong's kindness
and manners.
His story has inspired generation after generation of
TCM doctors to believe that the spirit of medical practice is
to help people.
In fact, Xinglin - which translates into "forest of
apricot trees", became a word that means doctors.
Doctor Sun Simiao who lived during
the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD) wrote the earliest article about
TCM ethics. This
article, titled Da Yi Jing Cheng, which means Great Doctor,
sets out the principles of a good practitioner.
First, a doctor has to be knowledgeable and highly
skilled, and dedicated to continuously improving these skills
to best serve the patients. Second, the doctor must have a
professional manner, including positive attitudes, a serious
demeanour, be properly dressed, confident and well
grounded. He or
she should also have a
calm and harmonious spirit and
mind, a sympathetic heart, a willingness to save people from
suffering and be prepared to sacrifice his or her own
interests - or even life - to save others.
A great doctor treats all people with equal kindness,
whether they are rich or poor, old or young, male or female,
friends or enemies, pretty or ugly. He or she is ready to help
patients whether the case is difficult or easy, whether it's
day or night, hot or cold, and regardless of the
practitioner's own hunger, thirst or fatigue.
The list of things a doctor must not do includes:
talking loudly, making flattering comments, gossiping, saying
bad things about other doctors, focusing on making a profit
from helping people, and prescribing expensive, difficult to
find medicines to patients who are rich. Dr. Sun Simiao was
called Yao Wang (King of herbal medicine) because of his
contribution to Chinese medicine.
In TCM, humanity and altruism are the heart of ethics.
That is why the names of many Chinese pharmacies and clinics
to this day include the word Ren, which means loving,
benevolence and kind heartedness.

Facial
Rejuvenation Acupuncture
We all want to look our best no matter
what age we are. Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture is a
painless, non-surgical method of reducing the signs of the
aging process and improving our skins condition.
Special hair thin needles are
inserted into specific points on the body following the
meridians of energy called Qi. Specific points are chosen
depending upon the individuals needs so each treatment is
individualized to address not only the signs of aging or other
skin problems such as acne, but also other factors that may
contribute to the skins appearance. Lifestyle counseling
regarding diet and exercise is also recommended to maximize
the benefits.
Most patients will have a course
of 10 to 12 treatments one to two times per week. Since every
person responds differently, patients may notice changes after
the first few sessions or not until 6 or 7 treatments. Factors
such as life style and condition prior to treatment will have
impact on how soon patients see results from
treatment.
Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture is
an effective weapon against the effects of time and our body's
imbalances on our skin. The results of treatment include the
improvement of the elasticity of facial muscles and leveling
of wrinkles, a rosier complexion, and overall rejuvenation-not
confined to the face.
When compared to visits to a
dermatologist or plastic surgeon for a face-lift, to Facial
Rejuvenation Acupuncture is a cost effective non-invasive
method for restoring a healthy more youthful appearance.
Patients can have a treatment and return to work immediately
after with none of the bleeding, bruising and swelling
associated with surgery or chemical peels. Call us to book
your consultation today and enjoy a more youthful and
rejuvenated appearance.

but was rediscovered by Dr. Usui, a Japanese professor. Reiki
is practiced by what is now, a world wide group of
individuals. Reiki can help individuals in the following
ways:
·
Aid in helping to heal Emotional, Physical and Spiritual
problems on an energetic level.

History and
Rediscovery of Reiki
After searching
through various religions to answer theological questions that
had been posed to him by his students, Dr. Usui discovered
Sanskrit symbols that Buddha was supposed to have used to heal
people. Though he had re-discovered these mysterious
symbols, he felt unable to use them, and therefore unable to
heal others with them. To fully understand them, Dr.
Usui decided to undertake a 21 day fast and meditation upon
the sacred Mount Kurayama, which was located outside of
Kyoto. It is told that on the last day of his
meditation, he was surrounded by light, and by spheres of
energy, each a different colour of the rainbow. The
symbols that he had found then appeared and the meanings for
each filled his mind.
Reiki
Today
Reiki is an
ancient healing modality that originated in mainland Asia, and
was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Christian headmaster and
minister from the University of Kyoto, Japan, towards the end
of the 19th century. "Rei" means spirit, aura, or subtle
energy. The second syllable, "ki", means energy or
power. A more traditional definition of Reiki is
"universal life force energy". Reiki is a hands-on form
of healing that channels this energy, or life force.
Students are attuned to the different symbols by a Reiki
Master, and will always have access to them, even if they do
not practice for years. Anyone can learn or use
Reiki.
Practitioners are
always safe from taking on anything negative from clients or
their surroundings when practicing Reiki. Reiki is
purely positive life force energy, and protects anyone using
or receiving it.
For a person who
is in good health, Reiki is used for relaxation purposes and
to restore depleted energy reserves. If a client is
unwell, spiritually, physically or emotionally, Reiki can be
used to help correct these problems on an energetic
level. Reiki is an intelligent force and goes where it
is needed in the body; a practitioner doesn't even have to
move their hands from the beginning position if they don't
feel the need. For those who feel helpless, (ie. too
overwhelmed with emotional problems that they feel out of
their control), Reiki can be used as a method to take charge
or responsibility for their problems---it is a tangible way to
make a difference in your life, or the life of someone you are
working on.
When you first
begin Reiki, a person opens himself or herself up to the
healing potential inherent in everyone. You also start
to become more accepting of what is ailing you, (physically,
emotionally or spiritually), and begin to understand its
message. Using Reiki is a way to become more
self-aware.
Life force energy
is always flowing through us, and is why we are alive.
This energy flows through our physical being along pathways
called meridians or chakras, (this energy also is around us in
our aura). Life force energy is what supports our entire
body, from our organs down to our cells. Because our
thoughts and feelings have a huge impact on our health,
negative ones can greatly disrupt or diminish the functioning
of our bodies and the energy flow to the different
organs. Reiki can help in unblocking these problems,
allowing a person's energy to flow naturally once
again.
****Reiki can be
used in every aspect of your life-from helping friends,
animals and plants, to using Reiki on objects to cleanse them,
or on your food to change its vibration, enhance it's
nutritive qualities and cleanse it. The only limit to
it's potential is a persons imagination****

Sogand Ijadi
RMT
Sogand Ijadi is a
registered massage therapist competent in the following
massage therapy techniques. She is available for bookings on
Tuesday all day, Thursday mornings and Fridays after 5:00.
Swedish massage the
most common form of massage, Swedish mainly relaxes the
muscles and eases aches and pains. Swedish massage is a system
of long strokes, kneading and friction techniques on the more
superficial layers of the muscles, combined with active and
passive movements of the joints.
Deep Tissue Massage As
the name implies, a Deep tissue massage releases the chronic
patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep
finger pressure on contracted areas, either following or going
across the grain of muscles, tendons, and fascia. It can be
used for specific work or full-body.
Hot Rock Stone Therapy
Warm stones are placed strategically on the back. The
whole body is then massaged with the rocks. The heat component
makes it good for arthritic patients as well as warming the
muscles for a deep tissue massage. Also relieves pressure from
PMS through the relaxing heat.
Corporate Seated Massage -
On-Site Seated Massage is administered while the client
is clothed and seated in a specially designed chair. These
chairs most often slope forward allowing access to the large
muscles of the back. On-site massage usually lasts between 15
and 30 minutes and is intended to relax and improve
circulation
Pregnancy Massage
Massage during pregnancy not only makes a woman feel
pampered, but offers undeniable physical benefits as well.
Massage can relieve fatigue, enhance sleep and calm an active
baby. Many pregnancy massage specialists integrate a variety
of techniques into their work. Depending upon where you are in
the pregnancy, the therapist may utilize reflexology, Swedish
massage or very light shiatsu.
