Message From the Editor
It has been a busy summer
getting ready for the opening of CITCM and living with all the
renovations that the clinic is recently been going through.
Thank you to all our patients for having patience (no pun
intended!) with us during all the renovations. We now have a
new treatment room completed and the new on site herbal room
is very nearly completed. This is the first news letter that I
have had time to put together since May, we will have more
regular issues for the winter.

Celebrate of the Opening of Canadian Institute
of Traditional Chinese Medicine
Canadian Institute
of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CITCM) opened this September
and we were very excited to welcome our new students in the
class of 2004. Our first class of students comes from a
diversity of backgrounds including physiotherapy, nursing and
zoology and also other health or educational practitioners.
Both staff and the first year’s students shared the excitement
as CITCM’s first year of studies
began.
This is a very
exciting time both for the new students and the school as
together we have the opportunity to form one of the finest
acupuncture and Doctor of TCM schools in Alberta. Through
fostering an environment of mutual resects and understanding
in our school with the students, faculty and members of the
public as well as having a highly qualified faculty teaching a
comprehensive curriculum, we will have an institution that
will truly become special. A hallmark of highly qualified
graduates will be a diploma from CITCM.
Dr. Xia Cheng
founded CITCM. It has been a long time dream for her to
establish a school to pass on her knowledge and share the
treasures of traditional Chinese medicine with members of the
public. Dr. Cheng trained and practiced both traditional
Chinese medicine as well as Western Medicine in China were she
saw the benefits of promoting communication and integration of
Traditional Chinese Medicine with conventional Western
Medicine by recognising and respecting the advantages of each
discipline. Since her graduation in 1983, she has been
continuously involved in clinic work, teaching and research.
In 1990, she received her Ph.D. in Medicine with major in
Acupuncture and Chronomedicine. She has been a professor at
several colleges, an instructor in different countries and has
several published books.
The mission of
CITCM is to supply our society with highly skilled acupuncture
and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners and to
that end we are committed to providing a superior learning
environment for students through a comprehensive curriculum
and an enthusiastic and qualified faculty. Dr. Cheng’s belief
that to promote the understanding that viewing body, mind and
spirit as a whole is essential to being an outstanding health
care practitioner.
CITCM is located
near 16th Ave and Centre St CITCM has easy access
from all directions. We are currently accepting applications
for programs starting in Jan 2005 and for Sept

Rosemarie's Story
In
February, 2004, I had a severe case of shingles around my neck
and scalp. I was in severe pain, with the left side of
my neck covered in blisters. At the same time, I was
experiencing lots of itching, just like with chicken
pox. I took viral medication prescribed by my
doctor. While the blisters broke and subsided to some
extent, the pain and itching continued to be severe. My
doctor prescribed another medication which did not provide any
relief after a week. I tried homeopathy and a viral
medication available over the counter. By the end of
February, the pain and itching were no better. I could not
sleep during the night. I had read acupuncture could provide
relief. I visited Dr. Xia Cheng who recommended daily
treatments for about 10 days along with a herbal treatment to
help with the itching and pain. After 4 days of
treatment, I began to feel relief and the pain subsided. I
could sleep through the night. By the 7th day, the pain and
itching were lessened. By the 10th day, the pain and
itching were virtually gone. Within one month of being
diagnosed with shingles, all symptoms were gone. I
continue to have acupuncture treatments on a monthly basis and
can see the benefit in building my immune system. I wish
I had come to Dr. Xia at the onset of the
shingles! Rosemarie Enslin
